Many people have considered getting additional education in order to advance their careers or perhaps to get into a career in the first place. When you start doing a search online for various colleges, you might be surprised with exactly how many different types of colleges are available to you. It is important for you to look at the choices that you have and then to make your decision, based on those choices as well as your decision as far as a career is concerned. In that way, regardless of whether you need something such as surgical technician certification or if you’re going to be going in for pharmacy technician training, you will make sure you choose a college that gives you what is needed.

There are also going to be times when a college is needed that is even more specific to your career choice. As an example, if you want to help people to design their homes and to make choices that will improve their living space, there are some interior design colleges that are available. It’s important to note, some of the college choices that you have available for this purpose are going to be very specific to interior design. Other college choices that are available, however, may offer some interior design courses but they are not necessarily going to focus on that as the overall criteria. It is very important for you to be able to distinguish between these two different items and to choose a college that is convenient for you and that will give you the specific education that is necessary.

Some people are going to want to take general classes when they attended college but for other people, it is going to be something that is very specific. Regardless of what you plan on doing when you go to college, however, you need to make some choices in advance so that you attend a school that is going to benefit you to the full. Some of those choices may require that you do a career search, looking for information about something specific that you plan on doing. You can then choose the college according to that career search, regardless of whether it is music colleges, if that is what you plan on doing or if it is radiology schools, if you plan on getting into the medical field.

There are also going to be times when you will not need to attend a college to take classes other than those that are specific to the career that you are choosing. This is the case when you plan on taking some massage courses, as they are generally very specific to individuals that want to get into massage therapy. This is a field that is in demand and it is one that you may find suits you well, particularly if you enjoy helping people with their ailments and making them feel better. Of course, there are many other colleges that you can choose as well that will assist you in making a career choice that will be fully beneficial to you. Just make sure that you take your time in making the decision so that once you are taking the classes, you can feel comfortable in the decision that you made.

I’ve been reading so long and doing basic math for so many years that it seems like second nature to me now. But I remember what it was like before I knew the basics.

I came home disappointed after my first day of kindergarten, telling my parents, “They didn’t teach us how to read.” I don’t know where I got the idea that this would happen, and honestly I can’t even remember if I came into primary school knowing the alphabet. By first grade, though, I had a basic command of addition and subtraction, as well as simple vocabulary words. I was no prodigy, but I like to think I was reasonably well-adjusted academically.

By second grade, most of my classmates and I could do the basics, save for a few stragglers. These were the kids who needed to use their fingers to count silently during math tests, who labored arduously through reading aloud. In retrospect, I wonder if any of these kids got to see a math tutor, or if my friends and I could have helped as reading tutors instead of scoffing. It seems cruel in retrospect, and I wish altruism would’ve come more naturally to me.

In time, I got my comeuppance. I needed tutors as well, for more advanced math courses in both high school and college. Really, though, there wasn’t any shame in it. I learned that at any time, we all could use a helping hand. Some just need it sooner than others, I suppose.

I remember when math was easy. I remember being the new kid in second grade and getting to the final round of a class multiplication challenge. I remember being able to do long sums in my head, knowing those multiplication tables cold. I remember the pride I took in being good at math.

And then I remember when math suddenly wasn’t easy anymore or fun.

It started in fourth and fifth grade with a teacher I had both years who didn’t know what she was doing, my grades slipping all the while. It continued in sixth grade with a teacher who didn’t even try, simply giving our class so-called math contracts and having us essentially teach ourselves. By high school, I needed a tutor.

Getting math help wound up being a godsend. It definitely helped me pass precalculus my junior year, calculus my senior year. Some people need a reading tutor, others require indepth help in the sciences. For me, after several years of lackluster math instruction, I needed a kind person or two to sit down with me and make math fun again.

There was the 20-something dude whose name I don’t remember who would sit at my kitchen table and patiently help me finish my homework. Then there was “Dave the Math Tutor,” the aging hippie and unabashed pagan who would bookend our sessions at his apartment by blasting Billy Joel and stories about having four girlfriends.

Dave was cool as anything and helped me survive the perils of high school calculus. And as an added bonus, math was fun again.
